The best entrepreneurs are those who can spot a trend before it’s even created. Saladworks grew out of the notion that customers should expect more from local eateries, diners, and fast-food franchises. As one of the first healthy food franchises, Saladworks is committed to providing delicious and healthy food that won’t break the bank.

In a time when fast-food continues to be bogged down by fried food, high fructose corn syrup, and mammoth proportions, Saladworks stands firm as a fast-food franchise where customers can enjoy numerous salads, wraps, and smoothies – guilt-free! To understand the success of the Saladworks franchise, it’s time to go back to its origin as one of the first healthy food franchises in America.

The Saladworks Franchise Story

John Scardapane’s multi-million dollar idea began as a simple observation as a chef at Southern New Jersey Country Club in 1985 – golfers were regularly choosing to eat salad over burgers. Scardapane realized that the salad movement may be starting to take off in America and he could be one of the first entrepreneurs to jump on this healthy food movement.

In 1986, the country club chef seized on the opportunity to buy a small kitchen space in the Cherry Hill Mall of New Jersey. At first, the management team of Cherry Hill Mall doubted Scardapane’s salad-only concept. When the salad entrepreneur agreed to sell sandwiches along with his delicious salads, Saladworks was born. In its first year of operation, Scardapane’s new concept became the highest grossing restaurant in the mall.

From the 1980s on, Saladworks seamlessly won over heart-healthy customers who understood the damage that greasy fast-food could inflict. Unlike salads made at national franchises like Burger King and McDonald’s, Saladworks’ salads are made to order in front of each customer’s eyes with wholesome ingredients and come in substantial portions to ensure the most bang for your buck. From that one location in 1986, Saladworks grew to become the nation’s number one salad franchise in 2002. By the end of that year, Scradapane’s leafy concept expanded to 30 locations nationwide.

In 2013 and with over 100 franchise locations, the healthy food franchise opened its first international location in the United Arab Emirates. Saladworks reached new heights in 2015 when private equity firm Centre Lane purchased the brand from Scardapane after recognizing Saladworks was primed for explosive growth within the franchise space.

Today the franchise operates in 18 states and recently announced plans to open in many more. From a seemingly innocuous observation 35 years ago to an international brand, Saladworks has more than proven over the years that it’s not only here to stay, but here to innovate.

Why Is Saladworks One of the Best Healthy Food Franchises?

1. A Healthy and Wholesome Brand

Saladworks was established on the notion that customers actually yearned for more than just fried and greasy food. Franchisees understand when they align with Saladworks that they represent a health-first franchise that truly cares about their customers. Saladworks constantly works to develop healthy and great tasting menu options.

2. A Healthy Food Movement

Say good-bye to the days of the supersize option and the big gulp fountain drink. In the midst of an obesity and heart disease epidemic, customers have consistently picked healthy options over unhealthy ones. As millions of Americans begin to bid adieu to burgers and fries, Saladworks has become an even more viable option than it was even 10 years ago.

3. Franchisees Benefit From a Wealth of Experience

A franchise cannot last for over 30 years with accumulating a wealth of experience and knowledge in the franchise industry. Under the tutelage of industry veterans, franchisees can rest easy knowing they are being guided by the best. Like every franchise, Saladworks aids franchisees in training, proprietary technology, marketing, and much more.

4. A Winning Formula

While Saladworks has many competitors in the fast-food space, the healthy food franchise boasts great sales numbers that all prospective franchisees will find interesting. According to Saladworks’ own website, the top quartile of Saladworks franchise owners earned an average of $1.2M in sales for the fiscal year 2018. That figure compares favorably with big brands like 7/11 and McDonald’s.

5. Ready-Made Brand Recognition

Perhaps the greatest advantage of owning a franchise is brand recognition. Saladworks has been an identifiable brand in the healthy-food franchise industry since its inception in 1986. Franchisees can begin selling their product to an established customer base from day one rather than spend years building their brand.
