The Story Behind the Challenger Sports Franchise
The largest soccer camp in North America, Challenger Sports has been a force in youth sports for many years, playing a key role in the development of countless players and coaches over that time.
The company runs a variety of soccer programs and offers numerous services, including summer camps for children ages two through five, international soccer camps for youths between the ages of five and sixteen, and more competitive programs for children between eight and eighteen. Specific classes for goalkeeping and year-round programs are also available. In addition, Challenger Sports also holds soccer clinics, tournaments, tours, and much more.
The origins of the company date back to 1985, when it debuted as “British Soccer Camps” in the United States. After growing for several years and diversifying its services and products, the company was rebranded as Challenger Sports in 1997 and continued to expand across all 50 U.S. states and seven Canadian provinces within just two years, also expanding to the United Kingdom and establishing a full-time training and recruitment operation there.
Shortly afterwards in 2001, Challenger Sports created a sister company called Challenger Teamwear to manufacture and sell soccer uniforms and equipment to youth soccer teams and leagues, later becoming a direct distributor of major brands like Under Armour, Adidas, and others.
The company continued to diversify, acquiring the TetraBrazil Soccer Academy in 2009, while 2010 saw Challenger Sports upgrade their activities for young children by enlisting the aid of Chris Sharman, a childcare and youth sports professional. Sharman’s experience helped Challenger Sports launch their TinyTykes soccer program for preschoolers, which soon won acclaim.
In 2012, the company acquired the respected goalkeeping soccer camp SoccerPlus, partnering with its own and former player and U.S. women’s national soccer coach Tony DiCicco in the process. Later, Challenger Sports began franchising in the summer of 2013, leading to further growth and growing brand recognition across North America. A year later in 2014, the company expanded its goalkeeping program again, partnering with former England International goalkeeper Richard Lee and his GK Icon franchise.
2018 saw further growth and changes for the company as it launched the innovative Challenger International Soccer Camp to reflect the global nature of the world’s sport. Today, the camp offers youth soccer players a diverse variety of coaching styles and practices to help them develop a multifaceted skill set and has emerged as one of the most respected youth soccer programs in the world.
